Ukraine and Russia agree to three-day ceasefire, Trump says

US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, hoping it will be the "beginning of the end" of the war.The ceasefire will take place from May 9 to 11 and will "mark the end of World War Two for the Russians", Mr Trump said in a Truth Social post. All directly destructive warfare will be suspended during the ceasefire, and each country will swap 1,000 prisoners, according to Mr Trump."The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day but, likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II," Mr Trump said in the post.Russia has also announced a ceasefire from May 8 to 9, while a military parade takes place in Moscow's Red Square along with commemorations for the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.Ukraine has also proposed an open-ended ceasefire and urged Russia to reciprocate.Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a three-day ceasefire, which Kyiv did not agree to.The two countries have also previously declared ceasefires independently of one another, which they have then accused each other of violating. Now, Moscow is demanding Kyiv pull back troops from its eastern Donetsk region, which it has failed to capture during the four-year invasion.Ukraine says it will not cede land that it controls.Ukraine's top negotiator and former defence minister Rustem Umerov is in Miami to meet with US representatives, as peace talks on ending the war have stalled in recent months.Reuters
