New research suggests that Australians are missing out on cheaper medicines and spending millions more on smaller quantity prescriptions. Since 2023, health practitioners have been able to prescribe some medicines in 60-day doses, but only 20% of medications are being prescribed at this rate. This is due to a lack of awareness and technical issues, with GPs and pharmacists often relying on outdated software and not knowing which medications are eligible for 60-day prescriptions. The government estimates that if half of blood pressure medication was prescribed at a 60-day dose, Australians would save $165 million each year. Patients can check the PBS website to see if their medicine is eligible for a 60-day prescription and ask their GP about it.
