The Queensland government will build a roundabout to improve the safety of a dangerous Bruce Highway intersection.In 2024, three people died in a five-vehicle crash on the intersection of the highway and Walker Street in Maryborough, three hours north of Brisbane.The LNP made a commitment to improve the safety of the intersection prior to the election in the same year.Today, the government announced a dual lane, four-leg roundabout would be delivered at the intersection, with construction to begin in 2027.Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) documents list procurement and construction of the intersection to commence in the 2027-28 financial year.Last month a TMR spokesperson said costing for the project would be announced once the construction contract had been awarded.In a statement, Assistant Minister for Transport and Main Roads Sam O'Connor said the announcement came after a detailed planning process."We took a calm and methodical approach to planning, and – as a result — this is a far more comprehensive upgrade and will deliver better safety outcomes for the community," he said."We will now get on with the detailed design so we can get shovels in the ground as soon as possible."
