Police in Far North Queensland have spent the day scouring a crime scene after human remains were found on a rural property west of Cairns. The remains were found in the yard on Tuesday night, after police went to the Dimbulah property on Stock Road to perform a welfare check on a 70-year-old man.A crime scene was declared at the time.Detective Inspector Jason Chetham said the site continues to be examined by scientific officers."In addition to the forensic processing at the crime scene, we have started to interview and take statements from a number of witnesses from both Dimbulah and beyond that," he said.Detective Inspector Chetham said a post-mortem examination was being conducted in Townsville on Friday."However, a positive identification hasn't been made, so we're not going to release any further details at this point in time," he said.Police forensics officers returned to the scene, photographing items from a toolbox and swabbing for evidence.Evidence markers and police tape had been placed in a shed, as other officers examined the inside of the house. The property is bordered by the Burke Developmental Road, a few kilometres west of Dimbulah and more than 100km from Cairns.Nuts and tropical fruits are grown on farms in the surrounding area.Detective Inspector Chetham said two people were known to live at the property, which was the focus of the investigation, but he would not confirm whether both residents had been accounted for.He said while the remoteness and isolation of some properties creates challenges, the community has largely been cooperative.Police were now appealing for further information, particularly any dashcam footage from in and around Dimbulah on Monday evening, specifically between the hours of 6pm and 10pm.
