Man charged with murder after woman shot on the Gold Coast

A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman was shot on the Gold Coast.Emergency services were called to a home on Loder Street in Biggera Waters about 8pm yesterday after reports a 23-year-old woman had suffered life-threatening gunshot injuries.The woman was declared dead at the scene.Queensland Police Detective Acting Inspector Leia Urquhart said the pair were believed to be in a de facto relationship and to have lived together in the unit.Ms Urquhart urged members of the public with more information about their relationship to come forward.She said the woman had a child from a previous relationship, who was not home at the time of the incident.Ms Urquhart said police recovered a homemade firearm from the home that they believe was used in the shooting.Sharon Burgess was at home when she heard a commotion from the neighbouring house.She said she called for an ambulance and rushed inside to help the woman, then performed CPR on her with instructions from the Triple Zero operator over the phone."It's very confronting," Ms Burgess, who knew the victim, said of the incident.Another local Charlie Jackson said he "felt sick in the stomach" after finding out about the incident.Mr Jackson said he was shocked by an alleged murder so close to home.Police arrested the Biggera Waters man without incident.He has since been charged with one count of murder (domestic violence) and unlawful possession of a weapon used to commit an indictable offence.He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates' Court today.
