Lethlean to challenge Victorian premier in Bendigo East

Publican Andrew Lethlean will take on Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan in the upcoming state election after announcing himself as the candidate for Bendigo East. In a video posted to social media on Saturday, the Nationals candidate said he had "had enough of this government and the people of Bendigo deserve better"."I have had enough of this government, and I don't think I'm alone," he said. "So many people are doing it tough and things have to change."He said the government "had its priorities all wrong" and listed safety, education, health and housing affordability among his priorities if elected. "Crime is out of control, cost of living through the roof, local businesses are battling when they should be thriving," he said. "I grew up in this fabulous town  The Bendigo East district has been a safe Labor seat since 1999, when now Premier Jacinta Allan was first elected as state member.At the age of 25, she won the seat from the Liberal Party, who had held it for the previous 14 years.During the 2025 federal election, Ms Allan denied the swing against Labor had anything to do with her, instead attributing it to "a cashed-up [Nationals] campaign".She had become premier just two years earlier after Daniel Andrews resigned. Victorians will take to the polls in November.
