Federal police charge man with using social media to threaten Victorian MP

A man in Victoria's east will face court next month for allegedly using social media to threaten a federal MP.The Australian Federal Police have charged a 51-year-old from Korumburra, about 120km south-east of Melbourne, in relation to a social media post that allegedly contained a threat.Federal police began their investigation on May 6 and two days later, searched the man's Korumburra home.During the search, investigators seized several electronic devices, including a mobile phone that will be forensically examined. He was charged with breaching the Commonwealth Criminal Code by using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.The man was bailed to face the Korumburra Magistrates' Court on June 18.AFP detective superintendent Amanda Glover said it was an offence to threaten democratically elected officials online. "Nobody, whether they are a parliamentarian or a private citizen, should be subject to online threats and attacks," Ms Glover said."If you think you can hide behind the anonymity of a screen and harass people online, think again."
