The Canberra Institute of Technology's chief executive "actively misled" the institute's board during her recruitment process, an inquiry has found.Margot McNeill was appointed to the position in June 2025 after holding a senior role at TAFE New South Wales. While applying for the CEO role, Dr McNeill did not to tell the CIT board she was under investigation by TAFE NSW for "serious misconduct".Dr McNeill has repeatedly said she was under strict obligation not to share the existence of the investigation with CIT during the recruitment process. The nature of the misconduct allegations have not been made public. The controversy sparked a public inquiry in the ACT Legislative Assembly, with the committee handing down seven findings. It found Dr McNeill should have disclosed the information about the misconduct investigation and findings to the CIT board in a timely manner."She actively misled the CIT board by denying that there was a finding of misconduct that had been made against her," the committee wrote in its report. It recommended the CIT board "take all steps possible" to obtain and consider the findings of misconduct made against Dr McNeill with a view to considering whether she remains suitable to remain as CEO.
