We are facing an unprecedented energy crisis [made] worse by the world's failure to face its fossil fuel addiction."Layered on top is a climate disinformation war globally and in Australia that is actively undermining the capacity to build a renewable, clean energy future and curb coal and gas exports."If these threats are not checked, accelerating climate change will crash society as we know it This is not speculation — it reflects the warnings of the world's leading climate scientists," he said. The ASLCG's report raised similar concerns about Australia's information ecosystem too.It said the destruction of climate and clean-tech data and research in the United States, by the Trump administration, was damaging the world's ability to combat climate change and drive clean-tech innovations.Recent controversies in the US include the plan to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the drastic budget cuts and de-prioritisation of climate-related research at NASA, and the job cuts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration."Possibly one of the most important actions the Australian government should take right now is to commit resources to do its part in shoring up the collection and analysis of national and globally-relevant climate data," the ASLCG report said."The government could commit to further strengthening the capabilities of Australia's climate sensor and satellite programs, at the CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology, and by establishing an Australian Institute for Earth System Science."That would require Australia's government stepping up to fill the global leadership vacuum in the climate science space. It's another important thing to add to the list.
