Alleged hit-and-run driver gave himself up after freeway death, police say

A 22-year-old man has died after being struck by a car in an alleged hit-and-run on the Mitchell Freeway in Perth's northern suburbs.Police received reports of a man being hit by a car in the freeway's northbound lanes between Hepburn Avenue and Whitfords Avenue around 7:20pm last night. Ambulance crews found the 22-year-old man with critical injuries.He died at the scene.Police allege a 30-year-old man from Iluka in Perth's north was driving the vehicle that struck the man, and that he left the scene after the crash.Police said he later reported to Joondalup Police Station, where he was arrested and taken into custody.The alleged driver has been charged with failing to stop and ensure assistance after an incident occasioning death, and failing to report an incident occasioning death or grievous bodily harm to police.He was refused bail and is due to appear in Joondalup Magistrates Court today.Mitchell Freeway is still closed northbound between Hepburn Avenue and Whitfords Avenue as police remain on scene.Traffic is heavily congested in the area, and Main Roads is advising drivers to seek an alternate route.Anyone with information or footage relating to the incident has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
